Tan Kah Kee Play

Ok, practically the whole of the Secondary 1 cohort watched the performance about the life of Tan Kah Kee. It was quite a play! I know many did not enjoy it as it was in Chinese but it was rather interesting a play.

It started with an introduction of Mr. Tan Kah Kee's childhood and his friends. It started with several boys fighting and the old Tan Kah Kee commenting about their actions. Then a boy in particular (I cannot seem to remember the name somehow :S) whom he was in very close terms with, saw Kah Khee and started talking about collecting something at the seaside. Kah Kee tried to convince him into going to school but he did not. Kah Kee then went to school only to read a text several times over. After a while, they realised that something had happened to Kah Kee's close friend. They went to look for him only to find that he was beaten up badly. Kah Kee then exchanged a few words with his friend before he died from the beating. Kah Kee then swore to set up schools to allow children to receive education so they would no longer engage in fights.

That the beginning, I won't go into any more detail as it would be a pain to your eyes sooner or later. Anyway, this is what I feel about the play:
Kah Kee was a really devoted friend, he kept the promise to his friend till the very end. He spent all his money on education so that a repetition of what happened in his homeland would never happen. He also treasured the spade which his childhood friend had given him as a parting gift even when he became a successful entrepreneur.
Ironically, though, Kah Kee went to Singapore in hope of earning more money to support his family. However, when he passed away, he did not leave a single cent for his family as he had spent everything on education. Clearly, Kah Kee took education really seriously and regarded it more highly than his family, whom he respected and loved greatly. This is a really wonderful virtue and, although I am not really a great fan of education, should be a value everyone should have.
Also, Kah Kee insisted that the Chinese Culture be preserved throughout history because of its wonders and such.

The play showcased several values of a great man, this play showed the virtues of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, the founder of Hwa Chong. We would not be here without him, I would not have written this without his founding of Hwa Chong. There would not be such a thing as ACE points or demerit points if he had not founded Hwa Chong.

PS: The last sentence is random, ignore it :)
